I talk about... racism. Sorry.posted May 12th 2011, 9:48PM
Mood: Embarrassed
I had posted a poll about this, but i deleted it. I'm sorry to post another journal so early, but i really want to explain my argument here.
I'm not a racist person. At all. I just don't think i am. I mean, it's never bothered me what ethnicity or religion someone was, so long as they were nice. Nevertheless, once in a while i'll say something i shouldn't have in front of someone. Something that, when worded incorrectly, (something i am liable to do, as i'm terrible at planning my sentences out before i say them) can sound a bit... well, bigoted and racist.
For example, in middle school i had a really bad reputation for this because of one lesson. We were covering Malcolm X and civil rights in a unit in my English class, and my teacher was talking about how in european cultures, the color black has a bad connotation, and linking this as symbolism of the white opinion of African Americans. She talked of how the color black has been associated with death and darkness, and white, purity and wholesomeness.
I shouldn't have talked. But i did. I laughed at that. I pointed to an african-american girl i knew and liked in the class and said out loud, still laughing,
"As if we actually have anything to fear from [her name]."
I was blacklisted. By her and everyone else. The fact was, though, that i said it because i thought the idea of anyone fearing somebody like her (she was a gentle, quiet person) and, by extension, an entire race of people and individuals they hadn't bothered to get to know, ridiculous. But everyone thought i was yet another pale-ass white girl who didn't want to associate with anyone not her color.
This happened again recently. Not nearly as severe, but still embarassing. In front of a guy.
Who now thinks i fear asians.
FML. Currently, just... Yeah.
I SWEAR I LOVE ALL PEOPLE PLEASE BELIEVE ME JUST BECAUSE I'M WHITE DOESN'T MEAN I'M RACIST
